UMass Amherst move in day can be extremely stressful during the start of the school year. We understand that feeling and that is why we have compiled a list on what to bring and not to bring during move in day. Here is the complete UMass Amherst packing list!
Room basics that you need to bring to UMass Amherst during move in day
Personal Items
- Student ID (you need this for Move-In, access to your hall, and your meal plan)
- License
- Additional identification if you plan on looking for employment (birth certificate, passport, Social Security Card)

- Small refrigerator 3.0 cubic ft. or less – with a ground adapter plug

- Self-balancing scooters, commonly known as hover boards (for fire safety reasons related to the battery)
- extension cords
- appliances not controlled by thermostats – for example, immersion coils (thermostatically controlled appliances are permitted – like popcorn poppers, coffee pots, automatic toasters – but must be operated in your building’s kitchen)
- large appliances – washing machines or full-size refrigerators
- candles, and incense burners
- air conditioning units of any kind
- weapons and firearms (these must be registered and kept with Cornell University Police)
