UMass Amherst Campus

UMass Amherst move in day can be extremely stressful during the start of the school year. We understand that feeling and that is why we have compiled a list on what to bring and not to bring during move in day. Here is the complete UMass Amherst packing list!

Room basics that you need to bring to UMass Amherst during move in day

Personal Items

  • Student ID (you need this for Move-In, access to your hall, and your meal plan)
  • License
  • Additional identification if you plan on looking for employment (birth certificate, passport, Social Security Card)

Shared Items – Check with your roommate(s)

  • Audio equipment
  • TV and DVD player
  • Gaming console
  • Printer and printer paper* (students receive a set number of free printed pages at print locations throughout campus each semester)
  • Coffeemaker with an automatic shut-off and integrated duel safety circuit
  • Microwave/refrigerator with integrated circuit (check out Microchill(Rentals)
  • Microwave up to 700 watts and 0.7 cubic ft.
  • Small refrigerator 3.0 cubic ft. or less – with a ground adapter plug
  • Area rug
  • Posters/art/decorations
  • Touch tone phone* (phone jacks are not available in CHCRC rooms)

Room Needs/Storage

  • Alarm clock
  • Storage bins
  • Under-the-bed storage trays
  • Stackable crates
  • Pillow top ottoman with inside storage
  • Shoe rack
  • Desk lamp (please use compact fluorescent instead of incandescent)
  • Fan
  • Drying rack for laundry
  • Bulletin board and pushpins
  • Dry-erase or paper wall/desk calendar
  • Mini toolkit (including screwdriver, hammer, wrench)
  • Command hooks/strips for hanging pictures/poster* (CHCRC residents should bring pushpins as command strips are not permitted there)

  • Sheets and pillowcases (to fit an XL twin mattress 80″ long x 36″ wide)
  • Towels (bath, hand and face)

  • Mattress pad/Memory foam topper (to fit an XL twin mattress 80″ long x 36″ wide)

What not to bring during UMass Amherst move in day (IMPORTANT)

  • Self-balancing scooters, commonly known as hover boards (for fire safety reasons related to the battery)
  • extension cords
  • appliances not controlled by thermostats – for example, immersion coils (thermostatically controlled appliances are permitted – like popcorn poppers, coffee pots, automatic toasters – but must be operated in your building’s kitchen)
  • large appliances – washing machines or full-size refrigerators
  • candles, and incense burners
  • air conditioning units of any kind
  • weapons and firearms (these must be registered and kept with Cornell University Police)
